Special Hazard Fire Protection _ Combustion Principles

Combustion Principles dictate the design and operation of fire suppression systems to successfully extinguish a fire. Combustion principles also play a part in how detection equipment determine the presence of a fire. The goal of any fire detection or suppression system is to detect a fire in its early stages of growth. Combustion principles analyze the gases and other by-products of fire to include heat, light and radiation.

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will:

  1. Learn the factors that affect heat release rates and growth of fires.
  2. Understand the elements of the fire triangle and how their characteristics are used for detection and suppression.
  3. Know the properties of various fuels and their by-products during combustion.
  4. Acquire an understanding of the methods and safeguards to prevent the explosion of  fuels.
