The course, Proven Approaches to System Power builds upon a basic understanding of system power supplies to enable effective field implementation. In this course we will discuss the composition, location, operation, and supervision of the charging circuit. Primary and secondary power will be covered in greater detail, and we will dive a little deeper into battery calculations. Details are emphasized to enable effective installation and troubleshooting.

Product Description / Course Objectives

  • Learners who complete this course will:
  • Learn what is considered primary and secondary power in an alarm system and how to determine the general requirements for each
  • Know what a charging circuit is composed of, where it is located, its general operation, and how it is supervised
  • Understand how to troubleshoot primary power in an alarm system
  • Understand how to troubleshoot secondary power in an alarm system
  • Review the two styles of transformers, what their specifications are, and how to determine the proper transformer for Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS)
  • Understand the reason for adding contingency in secondary power calculations and the amount specified in NFPA
  • Review how to calculate the amount of primary and secondary power needed to power an alarm system panel
